Science and Regulatory Information
Research published electronically in May, 2008, in the peer-reviewed scientific journal Food and Chemical Toxicology clearly establishes the safety of rebiana for general use to sweeten foods and beverages. Rebiana is the first consistent, high-purity sweetener composed of rebaudioside A, the best-tasting part of the stevia leaf, which has been critically and thoroughly examined for safety. Beginning in 2004, Cargill commissioned a rigorous safety evaluation program for rebiana in consultation with leading scientists. Cargill, in partnership with The Coca-Cola Company, has developed rebiana as a natural, zero-calorie ingredient, which will be marketed under the brand name TRUVIA™ (pronounced Tru-VEE-a).
Corporate Social Responsibility
Cargill and The Coca-Cola Company are committed to high standards of corporate social responsibility. Commercially, the strategy for rebiana is underpinned by a series of core principles which guide our operations. These include operating with sensitivity to the social and environmental impacts of our business; with transparency and accountability; and in partnership with all stakeholders who have an interest in rebiana.
Cargill believes that the rebiana supply chain has the opportunity to change the lives of farmers in the developing world for the better. We are applying best-practices both to ensure that high social standards are met, and to ensure our business measurably improves lives and local communities in the areas where stevia is cultivated and processed.
