What is Rebiana?

The search for a great-tasting, natural, zero-calorie sweetener, which has been underway for more than two decades, is over. Cargill, in partnership with The Coca-Cola Company, has developed rebiana, a new sweetener that gives consumers natural sweetness without calories and will help the food and beverage industry naturally reduce calories in their products. Rebiana is 200 times sweeter than sugar.

Rebiana comes from the leaves of the stevia plant, which was discovered more than 200 years ago in South America and has been used as a sweetener in various parts of the world for more than three decades.  However, rebiana is different from most stevia sold today because it consists of only the best-tasting components of the stevia leaf.  It is the first high-purity product of its kind.

Rebiana – Taste the Difference:

• Natural Innovation - Making the Product
This new sweetener begins with a leaf. The leaves are harvested and dried, and are steeped in fresh water in a process similar to that of making tea. Dried leaves are steeped in water in a process similar to making tea.  This unlocks the best-tasting components, which are then isolated and purified to make a food-grade ingredient.  The finished product is the pure sweetness of rebiana

• Quality and Consistency
The Coca-Cola Company and Cargill have discovered a way to keep the quality of rebiana consistent. This ability to control and predict the profile of the sweetener makes it possible to sweeten foods and beverages with it and offer a consistent, pleasing taste.

• Clean, Sweet Taste
Many who have tried stevia in various forms and didn’t like the taste now will be pleasantly surprised by rebiana’s clean, sweet taste when used to sweeten food and beverages.

TRUVIA™ natural sweetener, marketed by Cargill, is the only natural sweetener made from rebiana.

• Global Marketplace
Cargill works with farmers to help them identify the hardiest varieties of stevia, grow a consistent product and produce enough to serve a global marketplace. Only companies with the resources of                         The Coca-Cola Company and Cargill have the capabilities to improve the quality of the plant and expand the amount that is grown, and then bring it to consumers worldwide.

• Safety
Rebiana's safety has been evaluated in a rigorous scientific research program – the first of its kind to thoroughly and critically examine the safety of a fully characterized, high-purity form of rebaudioside A. The results of this program established the safety of rebiana – the ingredient in TRUVIA™ natural sweetener.

Ensuring safety in food ingredients is a key component of Cargill’s global business – it is something Cargill does every day across food and beverage categories and geographies. The Coca-Cola Company also has an uncompromising commitment to product quality and safety.  As the world’s largest beverage company, The Coca-Cola Company sources a myriad of ingredients from most of the world’s markets and uses sophisticated analytical testing methods to ensure the purity and safety of ingredients used in its products.  All of The Coca-Cola Company’s suppliers are monitored to ensure that their operations meet the Company’s strict quality standards.
